Lift Chair Advice
A Consumer's Guide to Lift Chairs
How to Choose a Lift Chair
Lift chairs have a powered lifting mechanism that pushes the entire chair up from its base. This allows the user to easily move to a standing position. There are many different factors to consider when purchasing a lift chair. Most lift chairs use electric motors, and some even feature a battery backup in case of a power outage. A lift chair can be purchased in different fabrics, recline positions, weight capacities, and sizes. There are so many options for sizing and recline positions that a lift chair can be found to accommodate virtually anyone’s needs.
Choosing a chair:
- Two, Three, or Infinite Position Recline
- Weight Capacity and Seat Size
- Material - Fabric, Vinyl, or Microsuede
- Back Style - Button Back, Seam Pillow, or Split Back
- Heat/Massage - Seat and/or Back
Two Position Lift Chair
A two-position lift chair has two backrest settings - upright and a slight recline. The slight recline allows the backrest to recline about 30 degrees for a comfortable TV viewing or reading position. Two position lift chairs are excellent for individuals who enjoy sitting upright or slightly reclined. The footrest is usually fully padded, and can be raised to a horizontal position to improve circulation.
Three position Lift Chair
A three-position lift chair has three seatback positions: upright, TV recline, and full recline. The full recline setting is good for resting and napping. However, it does not lie out completely flat so it isn’t ideal for extended periods of sleep. A three-position chair is a good option that offers a lot of flexibility in customization options. The recline function and footrests are operated manually.
Infinite Position Lift Chair
An infinite position lift chair has a hand controller that adjusts the angle of the backrest and footrest, and raises/lowers the chair. There are no preset positions on an infinite position chair. Each adjustment to the backrest and/or footrest happens in one fluid motion, so this chair gives you the flexibility to achieve the most comfortable position possible. Both the backrest and footrest are power operated, and can be independently adjusted. When fully reclined an infinite position lift chair lies out flat like a bed. Some models even have a mattress/fitted sheet accessory option.
